Beyond the Horizon

There is a particular kind of silence that only exists at the edge of things — the last ridge before a fjord, the last tree before a tundra. It is in that silence that most of this magazine's best ideas have started.

Exploration has always been sold to us as conquest: a flag on a summit, a first crossing, a record broken. But the explorers we most admire describe something closer to erasure — the self getting smaller as the landscape gets larger.

That shift in scale is not a side effect of travel. It may be its entire point. We go to the horizon not to reach it, but to remember how much of the map is still unwritten — in the world, and in ourselves.

This issue is dedicated to that feeling: the moment right before understanding, when a place is still asking you a question you don't yet have the words to answer.
