Reading the Weather Like Our Ancestors Did

Before satellites, fishing communities from the Faroe Islands to Polynesia built forecasting systems from close, patient observation — the color of a sunset, the direction seabirds flew before a storm, the particular hush that settles over a coastline hours before a gale.

Much of that knowledge has quietly disappeared, replaced by an app that tells us the same thing with less ceremony and less accuracy for hyper-local conditions.

A handful of coastal elders are now being recorded, finally, before that knowledge disappears with them.
